Gilda’s Club Seattle

No recipe today, but rather a blog about Gilda’s Club Seattle 15th Annual “Surviving with Style” Fashion Show and Luncheon I attended yesterday in Seattle.  If you are unfamiliar with Gilda’s Club, they are a non-profit organization that supports people living with cancer along with family members, partners and friends.  Gilda’s Club was founded by the comedian Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989.

BlogHer Food 2012

DAY One…. Attending the BlogHer Food 2012 conference here in Seattle yesterday and today.   This conference is so well organized, entertaining, informative, and just plain fun!   Have met many new food bloggers, some newbies like me, and others with very successful food blogs that are generous with their tips and advice on how to create and maintain a successful blog.  Great speakers, most notably favorites of mine were:  Elise Bauer, Kalyn Denny, Jaden Hair, and Jeannette Chen – what a treat to meet and listen to these fabulous women and hear about their marketing strategies and stories.  Photos from Friday’s lunch which consisted of sandwiches and salads – the food at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel tasted even better than it looks – and the food looked amazing!! More tomorrow….

San Francisco-style Potato Salad (aka Herman’s Potato Salad)

Herman’s Delicatessen on Geary Street in San Francisco featured what I, and many of the locals, considered to be the world’s best potato salad.   It was a basic recipe of potatoes, carrots, mayo (Best Foods of course), parsley and vinegar.  It had a silky consistency to it, very thin slices of potato, and was very white in color, as it did not contain any mustard or eggs.  No celery, no onions, no pickles, no pickle juice either.

Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Ganache Icing

This is an easy chocolate cake that gives you a lot of bang for your buck in both richness of chocolate and presentation.  Using a packaged cake mix will cut down prep time considerably, so majority of your time will be spent in assembly and frosting the cake.  Preparing both the mousse filling and the icing are easy and each only use 3 ingredients.  This is chocolate at its finest with chocolate cake, white chocolate mousse for the filling, and then a rich chocolate ganache icing to pull it all together.  Your guests will think you spent half a day preparing this dessert – only you will know the truth!

Party Sandwich Loaf

There’s an Irish saying that dates back to  the 16th century that goes… “April showers bring May flowers”.  It also brings thoughts of other showers, as in bridal and baby showers. The first question when planning a shower is, what to serve? If you have a couple of hours (yes this takes a little bit of time) and want to offer your guests a really great lunch, that is both light and easy to handle (since you might be balancing your plate on your lap as we often do at these functions), then try serving a Sandwich Loaf the next time it is your turn to host the shower.

Linguine and Clams (Linguine alle Vongole)

Linguine and Clams has a long tradition in Italian cooking, largely due to the fresh flavors of clams, garlic, and parsley.   Linguine is a form of pasta that is wider and flatter than spaghetti, but not as wide as noodles like fettucine.   Translating from the Italian it means “little tongues” and originated in Genoa, Italy. It is best combined with seafood, as compared to spaghetti which usually accompanies meat and tomatoes.
